Mi Opinión

He sido fan de Therese's desde que lei su libro, "Beyond Blue," donde nos habla sobre su experiencia con depresión y ansiedad. Ella es muy simpática, real, honesta... no tiene miedo de compartir su diario vivir, si con esto puede ayudar a otra persona. Ella está comprometida en la cuesta de educar a otras personas sobre salud mental, aún si tiene que poner su vida al descubierto. Ella escribe sobre depresión, ansiedad, depresión despues del parto y pensamientos suicidas, entre muchos otros tópicos.

"The Pocket Therapist" ("Terapeuta de Bolsillo") es como tener un Terapeuta, bueno, en tu bolsillo, el libro es pequeño asi que puedes traerlo en tu bolsa y contiene 144 herramientas, y pensamientos que pueden ayudar cuando te sientes deprimida, o ansiosa. Therese añade su característico buen humor a cada página. Yo no pude evitar sonreir cada vez que terminé de leer cada una de ellas. Y como muestra un botón: Ella dice que cada tarde entre las cuatro y seis, "la hora exacta del día cuando el azúcar y los colorantes rojos de los pastelitos de superman que fueron servidos en una de las fiestas infantiles en la escuela de mis hijos, comienza a hacer de mi vida un infierno" ella se sienta en su silla favorita y no se permite a si misma insultarse o hecharse la culpa del comportamiento de sus hijos. Yo debería hacer la prueba :) ¡he estado en sus zapatos!

Encontré en "The Pocket Therapist" un excelente método para alejarme de pensamientos negativos y una excelente fuente de ideas para sobrellevar depresión y ansiedad. Espero que este libro sea traducido al español algun día, yo conozco ciertas personas que podrían beneficiarse con él.

My Opinion

I've been a Therese's fan since I first read her book, "Beyond Blue," where she talks about her experience surviving depression and anxiety. She is quirky, she is real, she is funny, she is very honest, and she is not afraid to share her daily struggles, if doing so will help someone else. She is committed to educating people about mental health even if it means putting her own life out in the open for all to see. She writes about depression, anxiety, postpartum depression, and suicidal thoughts, among others topics.

"The Pocket Therapist" is like having a therapist, well, in your pocket, the book is small enough to carry in you purse and contains 144 tools, techniques, and thoughts that may help when you feel depressed, conflicted, or anxious. Therese adds her characteristic humorous twist to every page and I couldn't help but smile every time I finished reading each. Here is one example: She says every afternoon, between four thirty and six, "... the time of the day when all the processed sugar and red dye from the Superman cupcakes served at one of the birthday parties at my kids' school start to make my life a living hell," she sits in her favorite rocking chair and she is not allowed to insult herself or feel that she is in some way at fault for her children's behavior. I should try that!! :)

I found "The Pocket Therapist" a great way to stay away from negative thinking and a good resource for ideas on how to cope with depression and anxiety. I hope this book is translated into Spanish some day, I know some folk who would benefit from it.

La Comisión para la Seguridad de los Productos de Consumo (CPSC por sus siglas en inglés), además de la divulgación de retiros voluntarios, ofrece información y recursos para ayudarnos a proteger a nuestros hijos. Hoy quisiera compartir un video que la CPSC creó sobre el peligro de caída de televisiones y muebles sobre los niños. Debo advertirte que aunque se usaron muñecos para la dramatización, es inquietante verlo, lo fue para mí. Sin embargo, yo creo que esta información es algo que todo padre, madre o cuidador de niños debería saber. ¡Mantengamos a nuestros hijos seguros!

In addition to recalls, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission CPSC is a great resource for information about things you can do to keep children safe. Today I would like to share with you a video the CPSC made about furniture tip-overs. I have to warn you that even though dummies are used for this video, it may be a little disturbing to watch, it was for me. ¿Has llenado la forma del Censo? si no lo has hecho, este es un recordatorio para decirte que todavía tienes tiempo, sólo te tomará diez minutos y por favor no olvides contar a tus hijos :) Recuerda que el último día para el envío del cuestionario del Censo es mañana viernes 16 de abril.

Hay información muy interesante relacionada a los costos derivados del envío de la forma:

Por cada 1% de incremento en la participación ciudadana mandando sus formas por correo, la Oficina del Censo les ahorra a los contribuyentes $85 millones de dólares, esto debido a que no se tienen que mandar Censistas a cada casa que olvido enviar su forma. Si cada casa enviara su información, entonces habría un ahorro de 1.5 billones (con "B")

42 centavos es lo que le cuesta al gobierno por cada pago de estampilla de correo, a diferencia de un aproximado de $57 dólares que costaría a cada casa por el envío de un Censista.

Have you filled out your Census form? If you haven't, this is a friendly reminder that you still have today and tomorrow morning to do it. It only takes about 10 minutes and don't forget to count your children :). Remember the deadline to send your form back is tomorrow, Friday, April 16th.

Here is some very interesting information about the costs associated with the return of the form:

For every 1 percent increase in the national participation rate by mail, the Census Bureau saves taxpayers $85 million by not having to send census takers door to door to households that didn't return the form. If every household mailed it back, there would be savings of $1.5 billion. (That's billion with a "B")

It costs the government just 42 cents for a postage paid envelope when a household mails back the form. On the other hand, it costs on average about $57 per household to send a census taker! Whoa!!

Del 16 de abril al 31 de mayo en el parque California Adventure y en algunas áreas selectas del Disneyland Resort, se llevará a cabo el Festival Gastronómico y del Vino "El Arte del Sabor."

Chefs, vinicultores y maestros cerveceros se unirán para celebrar "El Arte del Sabor" mediante demostraciones culinarias y seminarios de vinos y licores. Algunos de los eventos especiales incluyen:

Taste Food-Wine-Life: Esta es una divertida y dinámica velada que tendrá lugar el 29 de mayo. Los participantes disfrutarán de entretenimiento en vivo mientras prueban una extraordinaria selección de vinos y deliciosos platillos creados por los chefs del Disneyland Resort.

Disneyland is a very happy place for our little ones to be sure, but did you know Disneyland offers entertainment for parents as well. From April 16th to May 31st, California Adventure Park and Disneyland Resort will host the California Food and Wine Festival.

Chefs, winemakers, and brewmasters will celebrate "The Art of Flavor" with culinary demonstrations, seminars, and delicious food, wine and spirits, and beer. Here are just some of the special events:

Taste Food-Wine-Life: This fun party will combine the best elements of the Food & Wine Festival: live entertainment, an outstanding selections of wines, and colorful decor. (May 29)
Sweet Sundays: Featuring a light breakfast buffet and sparkling wine. Guests will see demonstrations and taste signature desserts created by acclaimed pastry chefs.
Winemaker Dinners: On selected Friday nights guests will enjoy a meal paired with award-winning vintages and served at Steakhouse 55 inside the Disneyland Hotel.
Napa Rose Cooking School: Disney Executive Chef Andrew Sutton will host this hands-on course where each class will create and enjoy a four-course meal, expertly paired with wines, and each class member will go home with a white chef's coat embroidered with the festival logo.

Sounds wonderful doesn't it? These are just a few of the events happening during the festival. Let's Start the Conversación!" Pues hoy con mucha alegría les comunico que nuestro Panel ¡fue aceptado! gracias por tu apoyo en la votación. Last February I told you about the BlogHer community and conferences and I mentioned that this year a group of latina bloggers submitted a proposal for a session called, "Latinas in Social Media: Are We Out There? Let's Start the Conversación!" I'm very pleased to tell you our panel was officially accepted! But that's not all, we are not just involved in the content of the conference, but in the parties, too! Abril Mes de la Concientización del Autismo / April is Autism Awareness Month

Me sorprendió saber que, de acuerdo a información dada por el Centro de Control y Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC por sus siglas en Inglés), uno de cada 110 niños en los Estados Unidos padece de Autismo. Afortunadamente, en los últimos años ha habido mas y mas información accesible para ayudarnos a identificar algunas de las posibles señales tempranas de esta condición.

Abril es el mes de la Concientización del Autismo y Primeros 5 California desea que los padres y cuidadores de niños tomen consciencia de las senales tempranas del Autismo en un esfuerzo por ayudar a las familias a identificar la necesidad de intervencion temprana y tratamiento. Algunas de las posibles señales son:

El niño o niña:

No sonrie o balbucea a los 6 meses de edad
Tiene problemas para pararse, levantarse o alcanzar objetos al cumplir 1 año
No dice palabras sencillas como "mami" o "papi" al cumplir un año
No voltea su cabeza para responder a sonidos o voces
No reacciona a ruidos fuertes
Repite ciertos comportamientos, incluso unos que son peligrosos como golpearse la cabeza
No mantiene, o establece muy poco, contacto visual y quiere estar solo
No participa en juegos como "escondidillas" (peek-a-boo) y tampoco simula al jugar (como fingir darle de comer a una muñeca)
Cualquier pérdida del habla o habilidades sociales

Autismo es difícil de diagnosticar porque afecta a cada niño de una manera diferente. Tú como mamá conoces mejor a tu hijo asi que no dudes en visitar a tu doctor si notas alguna de las señales. I was surprised to learn that, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, currently one in 110 children in the United States has autism. Fortunately, in the past few years, there has been a lot of information available to help us identify some of the possible early signs of autism.

April is Autism Awareness Month and First 5 California is asking parents and caregivers to be aware of the following early signs of autism to help families identify the need for early intervention and treatment.

Child does not coo or smile by 6 months old
Child has trouble sitting, standing up, or reaching for objects by 1 year old
Child does no say simple words like "mama" or "dada" by one year old
Child does not turn his or her head to follow sounds or voices
Child does not react to loud noises
Child repeats certain behaviors, including some that are harmful like banging his or her head
Child makes little or no eye contact and wants to be alone
Child does not play games like peek-a-boo or "pretend"
Child shows any loss of speech or social skills

Autism is difficult to diagnose because it affects each child differently. You as a mom know your child the best so please don't hesitate to visit your health care provider if you notice some of the signs in your child. On more than one occasion I've told you how much my family and I enjoy V-me. Have you watched it? Programs are 100% in Spanish and besides having a variety of wonderful programs for adults, they have great educational children's programs. Every morning my kids after, watching Curious George on PBS, switch the Channel to V-me to watch "Jim de la Luna," "Bruno," and "Peep" three of their favorite shows.

I was very happy to see "Peep and the Big Wide World" on V-me, we watch it every time we go to visit family in Mexico, it's very cute. The three characters, Peep, a newly hatched chicken, Chirp, a smart and sassy robin, and Quack, an endearingly egotistical duck, explore their big wide world introducing science concepts in a fun way. Yo crecí viendo Chabelo, El Chavo del Ocho, el Tío Gamboín y Topo Gigio, si tú eres de México, seguro conoces a todos ellos. Cada Domingo a las 7:30 de la mañana saltaba a la cama de mis papás para ver "En Familia con Chabelo", cada noche tomaba mi lechita mientras disfrutaba Topo Gigio, ¡qué tiempos aquellos!

Ahora que vivo en los EU he ido conociendo algunos de los programas que la generación de mi esposo disfrutó cuando eran peques, un favorito fue "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" ("El Barrio del Sr. Rogers") Hace un par de años una de mis amigas le regaló un DVD de Mr. Rogers a mi hijo mayor ¡a mis hijos y a mi nos encanta!

Mr. Rogers nos dejó hace algunos años, pero me he enterado que videos de su programa todavía viven en la página web de PBS kids, estoy segura que a él le daría mucho gusto saberlo, puedes verlos aquí

I grew up with "Chabelo", "El Chavo del Ocho", "Tio Gamboin" y "Topo Gigio", if you are from Mexico, you know what I'm talking about. Every Sunday at 7:30 I climbed onto my parents' bed to watch "En Familia con Chabelo" or drank my milk every night while watching Topo Gigio, loved it.

Now that I'm living in the USA I've gotten to know about the great children's programs my husband's generation enjoyed when they were kids, one favorite was "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood." A couple of years ago a friend of mine gave my son a Mr. Rogers DVD and my kids still enjoy watching it.

Mr. Rogers passed away a few years ago, but I've read that his beloved program still lives on at the PBS kids webpage, which I'm sure he would be pleased to know! I'm so happy, too, go check it out

Hace algunas semanas empecé a leer el libro "Slow Death By Rubber Duck" ("Muerte lenta causada por el patito" no se traduce muy bien al español :) ¿verdad? Bueno, en pocas palabras es un libro basado en un experimento que realizaron Rick Smith, Director Ejecutivo de la Defensa del Medio Ambiente de Canadá, y Bruce Lourie, Presidente de la Fundación Ivey y activo promotor ecológico.

El experimento tenía el objetivo de medir los niveles de toxinas químicas a las que una persona (adulto o niño) es expuesta cotidianamente. Por cuatro días Rick y Bruce se encerraron y usaron, inhalaron y comieron productos que usamos todos los días, midiendo sus niveles de toxinas en sus cuerpos antes y después del experimento. Este libro es el testimonial de sus experiencias y resultados asi como de una vista a profundidad de cada uno de estas toxinas químicas a los que estuvieron expuestos.

En los próximos días les presentaré mi reseña, pero mientras tanto me enteré de un evento a llevarse a cabo mañana sobre este libro y pues no puedo dejar pasar la oportunidad de compartirlo con ustedes.

A few weeks ago I started reading the new book "Slow Death By Rubber Duck" by Rick Smith, Executive Director of Environmental Defence, Canada, and Bruce Lourie, an influential environmental thinker and President of the Ivey Foundation.

This is a very interesting book which was born as a testimony of an experiment Rick and Bruce conducted. Over a four-day period they used their own bodies to measure the levels of toxic chemicals that a person (adult or child) can be exposed to using every day household products and eating packaged foods. The book tells the story about their experience as well as giving a deeper view into each chemical they were exposed to.

I will write a review of the book in the next few days; meanwhile, I would like to share an event happening tomorrow which is related to this book.

"La Procesión del Santo Entierro"

Hoy es viernes santo y en algunas ciudades, particularmente en España y Latinoamérica, católicos participan en "La Procesión de Santo Entierro" o "Procesión del Silencio." La Procesión se lleva a cabo en silencio o bien al toque de tambores los cuales marcan cada paso de los participantes. "La Procesion del Santo Entierro" es una representación de la procesión funebre de Jesús. Este evento religioso y cultural se ha llevado a cabo cada Viernes Santo, por más de 300 años, en algunas ciudades, y es una de las experiencias más hermosas que haya vivido.

Hace tres años mi familia y yo celebramos Semana Santa en México y tomé algunas fotos que ahora les quiero compartir. Después de las fotos les comparto dos videos que encontré, uno fue filmado en San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, México, y el otro en España.

Estamos solamente a dos días del Domingo de Resurección, y para todos ustedes que lo celebran, espero que lo pasen muy felices.

Today is Easter Friday and in some cities, specially in Spain and Latin America, Roman Catholics participate in "La Procesión del Santo Entierro" or "Procesión del Silencio." This is a very solemn procession, usually in silence or with slow drums playing to a steady beat to mark each step of the participants. "La Procesion del Silencio" is a re-enactment of Christ's funeral procession. This religious and cultural event has been taking place every Easter Friday for over 300 years in some cities and is one of the most beautiful experiences I've ever had in my life.

I would like to share some pictures I took three years ago in México. After that you will find a couple of videos I found. One was filmed in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, México, and the other in Spain.

Hoy es el último día de las series, ya que estamos celebrando la Semana Santa. Esta última receta no es precisamente mexicana, sólo quería hacerla porque se me antojó cocinar salmon. A ver que opinas.

Receta de cuaresma #6 - Salmón en Salsa de Limón y Vinagre Balsámico

Ingredientes

1 cucharada sopera de aceite de oliva

1/2 cucharada sopera de mantequilla

4 filetes de Salmón

Sal y Pimienta al gusto

1 Cucharada sopera de ralladadura de limón

1/4 taza de vinagre balsámico

1 cucharada sopera de azúcar morena

Sazona ambos lados de los filetes de salmón con sal y pimienta. Calienta el aceite y la mantequilla en un sartén grande, cuando esté bien caliente, coloca los filetes y cocínalos por 2-3 minutos por cada lado. En un tazón mezcla el vinagre balsámico, la ralladura de limón y azúcar morena. Baña el salmón con esta salsa. Reduce el calor en la estufa y continuamente baña el salmón con la salsa, hasta que los filetes estén cocidos por completo, aprox. 5-8 minutos (o un poco más si los filetes son un poco gruesos). Sirve inmediatamente.

Yo los acompañe con arroz y estuvieron deliciosos.

Today is the last day of the series, Easter is in a few days. This last recipe is not a Mexican recipe, I just wanted to try it because it sounded so good. Let's see what you think.

Lenten Recipe #6 - Salmon in Lemon and Balsamic Vinegar Sauce

Ingredients

1 Tablespoon olive oil

1/2 Tablespoon butter

4 salmon fillets

Salt and pepper to taste

1 Tablespoon of lemon grated zest

1/4 cup balsamic vinegar

1 Tablespoon brown sugar

Season both sides of salmon with salt and pepper. Heat oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the salmon fillets and cook until browned, about 2-3 minutes per side. In a small bowl, combine balsamic vinegar, lemon zest and brown sugar, pour on top of salmon. Reduce heat and let it simmer. Continually spoon the sauce on top of the fillets until vinegar is reduced in half and the salmon is cooked through, about 5-8 more minutes (or longer if the fillets are thicker). Serve immediately.

I served over brown rice and it was very tasty.

"La Rosa de Guadalupe" ("The Rose of Guadalupe") is a series of mini soap-operas each compacted into a single hour. It tells stories of struggles with financial problems, addiction, domestic violence, divorce, among other things, and demonstrates how through faith, hope, and love everything can be transformed into a positive outcome. This is not a program about religion; however it does aim to inspire anyone who is going through difficult times. In each episode, the new main character begins by going to "La Basilica" in Mexico City, where he or she asks for a miracle, and then comes back at the end to give thanks for the miracle performed. The drama comes in between.

It's nice to see happy endings, don't you think? If you live in the USA, you can watch it (in Spanish) every Friday night at 10:00 p.m /9:00 central on Univision, or you can buy the series on DVD. Today the CPSC and Health Canada in cooperation with Infantino are announcing a voluntary recall of more than 1 million baby slings after three infants deaths were reported. Ya se habrán dado cuenta que me gustan los tacos ¿verdad? :) Son versátiles, fáciles de preparar y a mi familia les encantan.

Ingredientes

2 paquetes (12 oz) de Camarones. En esta receta utilicé Camarones en mantequilla y ajo de la marca Sea Pak, puedes encontrar diferentes tipos en el departamento de congelados de tu supermercado

12 tortillas de maíz

1/2 lechuga de bola (iceberg) picada finamente

Guacamole

3 aguacates medianos picados en cubitos

1 jitomate picado en cubitos

2 cucharadas soperas de cebolla, picada finamente

1-2 chiles serranos picados finamente*

Cilantro al gusto, picado finamente

1-2 limones

Sal al gusto

Prepara el guacamole primero, en un plato ondo junta el aguacate, jitomate, cebolla, chiles* y cilantro. Añade el jugo de un limón y sal al gusto, prueba, si crees que necesita un poco más de limón agrega sólo la mitad de otro y prueba otra vez, hasta que quede a tu gusto. Cubre el guacamole completamente con plástico y ponlo en el refrigerador

Prepara los camarones como lo indica el paquete. Cuando estén listos calienta las tortillas. Pon un poco de lechuga sobre la tortilla, un poco de guacamole y los camarones, sirve en seguida.

Yo acompañé mis tacos con frijoles negros de la olla, ¡a mi familia les encantó el menú!

* Generalmente yo pico el chile y lo pongo en un platito a un lado, asi le pongo chile sólo a los platos de las personas que si comen picante en esta familia. Si tu no comes picante no se lo pongas, el sabor cambiará un poco pero el guacamole estará igual de rico.

As you can see, I love tacos :) they are versatile, easy to make, and my family loves them, too.

Ingredients

2 (12 oz) Shrimp boxes. For this recipe I used Sea Pak Shrimp Scampi in butter and garlic sauce, but you can use any kind, you can find them in the frozen department. Of course, you can always use fresh shrimp from the market.

12 corn tortillas

1/2 iceberg lettuce, finely chopped

Guacamole

3 medium avocados, chopped in small cubes

1 tomato, chopped in small cubes

2 tablespoons finely chopped onion

1-2 serrano peppers, finely chopped*

Cilantro, finely chopped

1-2 key limes

1/4 teaspoon salt

In a bowl combine avocado, tomato, onion, serrano peppers*, cilantro, the juice of one lime, and salt. Taste it, you can add a little bit more lime juice if necessary. Cover the Guacamole with plastic and put it in the fridge.

Cook the shrimp following the package directions. When ready, warm the tortillas. Add lettuce, guacamole and top with the shrimp, serve immediately.

I cooked some black beans to complete my dinner and my family loved it!

* I usually chop the peppers and leave them on another plate, that way I just serve them to those who like spicy foods. If you don't like spicy food, you can omit them, the flavor in the guacamole will change a little but it still will be great!

¿Has visto Handy Manny? seguro que si tienes hijos has visto esta linda caricatura, pero si no, te cuento que Manny es un hombrecito muy responsable y bilingüe, tiene un negocio donde se hace cargo de las reparaciones de cualquier persona que le llame por teléfono. Have you seen Handy Manny? He is a lovely cartoon character who is bilingual, caring, and a very responsible little man. Manny has a business in town and promptly helps anybody who calls his shop. His tools have a life of their own and they are bilingual as well :)

I've heard Handy Manny is coming out with a new primetime special called "Handy Manny Big Race." The show will debut live this Saturday, March 20th, at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT on the Disney Channel.
